1848 Victorian 15k Turquoise Ring with Natural Pearls

A lovely antique British Victorian 15k gold ring, with a round bezel cluster of Persian turquoise cabochons and natural saltwater pearls, and flanked with highly decorative reticulated shoulders with stylized scrolls. The shank is also engraved with decorative patterns. The hallmarks date this ring to the year 1848.

In design, this ring is all sweetness and romance, encapsulating the lulling sentimentalism of the English Romantic period (c. 1800 – 50s). During this time, artists and designers swooned and obsessed over old Norman ruins and gothic cathedrals, leading to a revival in the decorative arts of idealized ‘historical’ designs channeling Medieval and Renaissance motifs. This ring, with its flower-like cluster arrangement, fine band of granulated ‘beading’ surrounding the bezel, highly decorative shoulders, and collet setting is imitative of designs found on 15th-17th century European rings.
