6.22 ct No Heat Ceylon Sapphire Ring

An early-mid 20th century 6.22 ct sapphire cocktail ring, the stone GIA-certified natural no heat Ceylon (GIA report 2211127299), in a heavy 19.2k gold setting studded with rose cut diamonds (30 total, approx. 0.91 ctw). The sapphire is of a classic Ceylon cornflower blue, with vivid saturation and of a velvety medium tone, without graying or paleness. There are some characteristically Sri Lankan rutile inclusions, but the stone is not cloudy or milky. The 6.22 ct weight is not an estimate; the stone was removed from the setting and independently weighed with a precision scale. While GIA has characterized the present sapphire as a step cut stone, its faceting style could be more specifically described as a Ceylon cut— a mixed cut pairing a step-cut crown with a brilliant-type pavilion. So named due to its longstanding ties to Sri Lankan gemcutters, the Ceylon cut is considered nowadays to lend gems a glittering but vintage appearance. The Bombé-type openwork setting is of a style originating from the Ottoman Empire, but by the early 20th century was popularly made in many parts of Europe. The present ring setting was crafted locally in Porto, Portugal, and bears a pre-production gold guarantee mark for the city, as well as a post-production hallmark for solid gold. The uniquely Portuguese 19.2k purity is further indication of local craftsmanship. This ring has been independently appraised by an certified AGS gemologist.
