British Victorian Watch Chain 9k Gold Reticulated Chased Starry Links 33.5 g

A large and substantial late Victorian era watch chain, weighing 33.5 grams and measuring 16.3 inches, of solid 9k rose gold, re-fitted as a versatile necklace chain with a dog clip on one end and a large bolt clasp to the other. The chain consists of six rectangular links with scalloped edges, chased and textured sides, and intricate star-shaped reticulation. Interspaced are 47 belcher-type circular links with clean chunky edges, which provides a handsome contrast against the fanciful whimsy of the starry rectangular links. A series of beveled circular links at both ends enable the chain to be worn with a customized length; the full 16 inches are great for shirts and sweaters, while shorter lengths are suitable for choker-type stylings (or when an ornament needs to be worn high around the neck). The large bolt clasp is excellent for attaching charms and pendants.

Description

Date: c. 1880-1900s, late Victorian era

Weight: 33.5 grams

Material: solid 9k rose gold

Marks: [9c] on two locations: dog clip, and one of the chain links

Length of chain, end-to-end: 41.5 cm (16.3 inches)

Max. width of chain: 8.5 mm

Dimension of reticulated plaques: 21 x 8.5 x 3.5 mm (length, width, depth)

Diameter of circular links: 6.8 – 7 mm

Thickness of circular links: 1.25 mm (i.e. thicker than many ring shanks)

Condition: excellent antique condition. Dog clip latch is still tight and rests flush. Chased details to the side of the reticulated plaques are still crisp, with original yellow gold wash still preserved. Three links on both end appear to be later-added extensions; they are all of thick 9k rose gold construction and matches the rest of the chain well. I have had my jeweler inspect and secure all links (any open gaps to links were soldered shut, and tiny age-related splits to the side of another link was spot restored).
